How Much Does Asphalt Paving Cost in Chico & Butte County?

It’s the first question everyone asks, and the honest answer is “it depends.” But it depends on specific, knowable things — so here’s a real breakdown of what drives asphalt paving cost in Chico, Oroville, Paradise, and the rest of Butte & Glenn Counties in 2026.

What you’re actually paying for

An asphalt price isn’t just “the blacktop.” The biggest cost drivers are the things you can’t see once the job is done: excavation and grading, the base material and how deep it’s compacted, drainage work, and the asphalt thickness. A thin mat over a weak base is cheap today and a failure in three years. A proper base under the right thickness is what makes asphalt last 20+ years.

The main things that move the price

  • Square footage — bigger jobs cost more total but often less per square foot.
  • Asphalt thickness — ~2″ for residential driveways, 3″+ for commercial and heavy-truck areas.
  • Base condition — paving over bare dirt needs more base prep than resurfacing solid old asphalt.
  • Demolition — ripping out and hauling old concrete or asphalt adds labor and dump fees.
  • Drainage & grade — if water pools, it has to be fixed first, or the new surface won’t last.
  • Access — tight or steep sites slow the crew and equipment down.

New, resurface, or overlay?

Three different jobs at three different prices. A full new install (excavate, base, pave) is the most involved. An overlay lays fresh asphalt over a sound existing surface — much cheaper, but only works if the base underneath is still solid. Resurfacing sits in between. Part of an honest estimate is telling you which one you actually need — not selling you the most expensive option.

How to spot a quote that’s too cheap

If one bid comes in dramatically lower than the others, something is usually getting skipped — base depth, compaction, or drainage. Ask every contractor to put the asphalt thickness and base work in writing. A quote that just says “pave driveway – $X” with no specs is a red flag. The cheapest paving job is almost always the one you pay for twice.

Getting an honest number
